CoolSculpting-More Men Opting for Fat Freezing

More men than ever are choosing Coolscupting® for freezing away those unwanted love handles and pockets of fat that tend to increase as we age regardless of exercise or weight.

Why the big increase in the number of men seeking out this non-surgical fat reduction procedure? The fact that Coolsculpting® is non-invasive appears to be a big plus for men. For those who like to be in control, the idea of any kind of anesthesia or surgery can be a turn-off. Since Coolsculpting® is an office procedure, it does not require any type of anesthesia and is non-surgical.

Men are sometimes accused of being quite sensitive to pain, and Coolsculpting® is a fairly painless procedure. The first couple of minutes the area being treated feels quite cold, but after that, most guys very easily tolerate it.

For guys on a tight schedule, Coolsculpting also fits the bill. Much like a workout at the gym, Coolsculpting takes one hour per session. It can be fit in during a lunch break or an hour before or after work.

Add in the big screen TV and Netflix we offer at the office, the private entrance, the wi-fi connection and I-pad, and the appeal begins to become quite apparent. Many men we see prefer to have multiple sessions of Coolsculpting at the Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery rather than liposuction. While it may take more time than using liposuction techniques such as Smart-Lipo or Body Jet to see the results, for many guys the trade-off is well worth the time spent.

Maintaining Facelift Results

When my patients invest in a surgical facelift, it is not surprising that they want their results to be maintained for as long as possible.  So what’s the secret to keeping your facelift looking fresh and your appearance more youthful?

The number one thing that helps maintain that youthful appearance is taking great care of your skin.  Maintaining your skin from the inside out is a great way to keep your skin looking fresh.  A diet that includes fresh fish, chicken, nuts, vegetables and fruits will provide you with a healthy glow. Keeping well hydrated is also important for helping skin look fresh and decrease the appearance of wrinkles.

Engaging in a great skin care routine with the help of an aesthetician or dermatologist is another benefit.  Any dark spots, or broken capillaries can be reduced or eliminated with an IPL laser or through physician based skin care products such as hydroquinone.  Gentle, regular exfoliation of the face rids the skin of dry skin cells revealing a more refreshed appearance.  Many women and men use a retinol cream or gel at night to maintain a youthful skin appearance.  Our skin care aesthetician, Lisa Perdue, is well trained in helping our patients find products and services that are personalized for maximum results. No maintenance of skin can be complete without the use of a broad-range sunscreen every day, not just in the summer.

Beyond skincare, many of our patients are using our non-surgical procedures such as Ultherapy or Exilis Elite on an annual basis to stimulate collagen beneath the surface of the skin and maintain their facelift results.  Exilis offers the benefit of decreasing fat under the chin and neck, while Ultherapy can help subtly lift the brow area and tighten the skin.  The occasional use of Botox or Xeomin, or facial fillers that add volume to the face such as Radiesse or Voluma can also be of benefit.   With proper maintenance, your facelift result and, therefore, satisfaction will be greatly increased.

Liposuction and Weight Loss

Liposuction and Weight LossMuch to the disappointment of many of our patients, liposuction, Coolsculpting and Exilis Elite are not procedures that result in much weight loss. They do help to sculpt and reshape the body. All of these procedures do destroy fat cells permanently, but the end result of the procedures is that the body is more balanced and proportional.

We offer several types of liposuction, from SmartLipo Triplex, which is a triple wave length laser form of liposuction, Body-Jet liposuction which uses water to dislodge the fat cells, and SAFElipo which is an advanced liposuction technique for removing fat. All of these are surgical procedures but offer quicker recovery, less bruising and less swelling than would be expected with traditional tumescent liposuction. These techniques all are capable of removing large volumes of fat, most particularly, Body-Jet, but none of them are designed for weight loss.

CoolSculpting is an in-office procedure that freezes the fat in a given area in about a one hour session. Results are seen gradually over the next several months. Often multiple treatments are required to achieve desired result. Results are more variable than with liposuction. Another non-surgical device, Exilis Elite uses radiofrequency technology to destroy fat cells in one hour sessions as the device is moved rapidly over the treatment area. A benefit of Exilis is that it is able to treat areas such as the arms, neck, knees, flanks, and other areas that are difficult to treat with CoolSculpting, or in some cases, with liposuction. As with CoolSculpting, results are not as predictable as with liposuction.

Exilis ELITE

Exilis EliteThere are many new non-surgical devices for improving appearance that come on the market each year. Deciding which technology to choose that makes sense for our practice and patients can be a bit daunting. We look for devices that are FDA approved, safe, and can offer significant, effective results. Some years there are no non-surgical devices that fit our criteria. This year, we have added BTL’s Exilis ELITE to our line of non-surgical treatment options.

A second generation device, Exilis ELITE utilizes radiofrequency technology that targets fat cells for body contouring and also offers skin tightening benefits. It is an office procedure that requires about an hour per treatment. For facial treatments where skin tightening is the goal, 3-4 treatments spaced about 7-14 days apart are recommended. For body contouring 4-5 treatment sessions are typically required depending on the body area and specific concerns.

Performed by our medical aesthetician or our registered nurse, patients remain comfortable while the warm applicator is moved quickly over the treatment area. A built-in cooling device insure that the skin does not become too hot. Depending on whether the goal is body contouring or skin tightening, the RF settings can be adjusted for various depths for maximum effectiveness.

Unlike our Ultherapy treatment, which uses ultrasound technology for lifting and tightening the skin, and our CoolSculpting device, which uses cryolypolisis to freeze the fat, using radio frequency technology, our Exilis ELITE is able to treat other areas that have been impossible to treat with the other devices. In addition to face, neck, abdomen, and back fat the Exilis ELITE can be used on arms, knees, male breast, and thighs safely. This has been a real benefit for patients who seek fat reduction or skin tightening in those areas. While not a replacement for liposuction or a facelift, for patients who do not want surgery, Exilis ELITE offers a safe and effective alternative for skin tightening and targeted fat reduction.

How to Know if You Need a Tummy Tuck

With all the new options in body contouring; SmartLipo, Body-Jet, Exilis Elite, CoolSculpting, just to name a few, you may wonder if tummy tucks are becoming a thing of the past. The short answer is no, not too likely.

Women who have had a pregnancy often come to the realization that even when they have lost their weight gain from the baby, there remains some loose skin from the sudden weight loss and the abdomen can still protrude in a way that it did not pre-pregnancy. The problem is that the size of baby has stretched and separated the muscle (diastasis). An easy test is to lie on your back and lift your legs up together, if your upper stomach still protrudes, chances are good that the muscle has been separated and an Abdominoplasty is the only way to correct the problem. The surgery will also help reduce the loose skin for much sleeker and youthful contour. Many people report that after their Abdominoplasty, they have a flatter stomach than they’ve ever had in their life.

Men will frequently select Abdominoplasty if they have had extensive weight loss and are left with a great deal of loose skin. Most liposuction and non-invasive techniques can not fully address this problem. Those who have been successful at losing weight can be very disappointed at the loose skin that remains. Abdominoplasty can provide an excellent solution. For those with small pockets of excess fat and only a small amount of loose skin, SmartLipo can often be used to remove the fat and also provide a lesser amount of skin tightening.

If you are interested in Abdominoplasty or any of our body contouring options, please call Dr. Ringler today and request a complimentary consultation.

Most Common Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men

Although men still only represent about 10% of plastic surgery patients nationally, we have experienced a significant increase in men seeking plastic surgery over the past few years. According to a recent article by ASAPS, here are some of the more common complaints that men express as they age, and how they can best be addressed.

Even with diet and exercise, maintaining a fat free physique is a complaint we often hear in our practice. Fortunately, with body contouring procedures ranging from the non-surgical CoolSculpting procedure to several different types of liposuction, many of these problems can be addressed fairly easily. Just as with women, men who are close to their ideal weight but have isolated areas of fat that don’t respond well to diet or exercise are the best candidates for liposuction or CoolSculpting. Liposuction was the number one requested procedure by men last year.

Another complaint is the fat tends to become deposited around the chest area as men age causing the much despised “man boob”, which is clinically called gynecomastia. This can also be a problem for younger men, and is one that is fairly easily treated through either liposuction or removing the excess glandular tissue. This is one of the top five procedures for men and according to ASAPS statistics, and it affects anywhere from 40-60% of all men.

As men age, they may also be bothered by wrinkles or sagging around the jowls or neckline. Botox, facial fillers like Radiesse, Juvederm and Belotero are often requested by men who want to slow down the aging problem and address wrinkles. For those who have more sagging of the face, sometimes a MACS lift or blepharoplasty (eye-lift) or neck lift can address the problem. Fortunately, most plastic surgery procedures today are performed on an outpatient basis and have quicker recovery times than previously. This is particularly important to men who want to have something done to improve their appearance but don’t want the downtime associated with some former surgical procedures.
